INDEPENDENT FABRIC & SUPPLY STORES
A spectacular 40+ year old woman-owned, local (to Berkeley, CA) fabric shop with a vast range of garment fabrics plus glorious cottons, tons of patterns, and buttons galore. They are so friendly, so call them with any questions. AND… you get a 20% discount on any full price items with code: GROVE20
Based just off the freeway in Whately, MA, Valley Fabrics has a large and diverse cotton selection as well as a small but mighty garment fabric section. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
A fantastic woman-owned community fabric and fiber craft store in Turner's Falls, stocked with donated and rescued fabrics, zippers, thread, buttons and every single other sewing object you can imagine. It is a thrift store with a mission to supply everyone with affordable materials while helping those with too much reduce their stashes in a comfortable way.
A lovely fabric rescue shop in Holyoke, MA.
This wonderful shop + school in Brattleboro, VT is an easy drive away and has a glorious selection of fabric (and knitting and weaving) and notions. The selection is small (because this is a small local shop) but I feel confident you’ll find something you’ll love.
A Cambridge, MA shop that is “Part sewing studio, part fabric and yarn shop, gather here is Cambridge’s only stitch lounge, created to cater to your fiber craft goals.” They have a lovely selection of garment and accessory/quilt fabrics notions and beyond.
Located in West Springfield, Osgoods is a warehouse-like fabric store with a strong focus on home decor and quilting fabric but with a large selection of garment fabric as well. If you go, give yourself some time to look around and be a tiny bit overwhelmed. It is a bit of a wild experience and you don’t always get to know what the fabric is made of.
INDEPENDENT PATTERN COMPANIES
Peekaboo Pattern Shop (funny name but tons of good patterns for woven and stretch fabric)
Closet Core (wide range of sizes and well written patterns)
Cashmerette (curvy and plus sized fashionable garment patterns)
Grainline Studio (good selection of wardrobe basics in the full range of sizes)
Helen’s Closet (we use their Sam’s Apron pattern in the studio and it is awesome!)
